Kaftan short history
The Kaftan actually originated in the Middle East and was once worn by men. Now the kaftan is worn by all people around the world and is so synonymous with Muslim women. In the past, the caftan was worn by the sultans of the Ottoman dynasty. They wear kaftans with luxurious designs which are made of silk and have many intricate and beautiful ornaments.
The kaftan itself is a long robe, with a long sleeve design and wide collar. Usually also worn with a belt. Kaftans are made with silk or chiffon for a loose feel.
In Russia, the kaftan has a design with a floral motif and uses a slightly thick silk material. There, caftans are worn by men with linen pants, boots, and hats. They use it when riding horses.
Unlike Russia, the kaftan in Africa is thin, worn by both men and women. The thin material means that the wearer does not feel hot. This is adapted to the climate in Africa which is indeed hot.
In the 1950s and 1960s, renowned designers Christian Dior and Balenciaga adapted the caftan to become a fashion trend in Europe. Then, in 1996, Gucci also released the caftan as its Spring collection. Not only that, leading designers such as Elie Saab have also worn caftans in the Red Carpet event.
